You mentioned it took only about 1.5 qts. I just did mine today and ended using all of the 2qts I bought and the fluid still didn’t come out the fill hole. I was on level ground so idk why it wasn’t enough. I have a Chrysler 8.25 rear. I can feel the fluid if I put my finger in the fill hole so I left it alone and went for a test drive and I’m 100% sure my diff is way louder than before the fluid change. Should I add more fluid?? Is it critical for the rear if I don’t fill it till it comes out the fill hole? I mean it can’t be that low if I can feel the fluid.

The only part missing is that it’s nearly impossible for a lot of high mileage XJ’s to get the tranny pan disconnected from the dipstick. I legit tried for almost two hours of prying and tugging. I even took a torch to it but nothing worked. I tried to disconnect the dipstick and take the whole thing out but I could get that either. Finally I just cut the pipe and replaced it with rubber tubing and clamps. 👍🏽

Great video! I was doing ball joints and the shaft on the passenger side didn't want to go back in so I figured I'd tap it in with a hammer and see if the small chance of not damaging the seal prevailed which it didn't. My XJ was driven with a leak and therefore low fluid. There's definitely metal in the oil and on the magnet but it's okay as long as no damage was done past any of the serviceable parts (gears/bearings). With it being relatively low miles since the leak started and it not being a much worse picture so far, I doubt that it'll be that bad, which I'll inspect when I get the caps off. The video was great for helping me understand this differential. I decided when I was doing the ball joints and purchased the adapters for my press that I do not want to skimp out on special tools so I foresee utilizing loaner tools from the parts store

I just want to know how you managed to get water to flow through the thermostat housing. If the thermostat is in place and functioning properly, running water into the top radiator hose should simply fill up the hose.
